Innovation grant for milk dispensing technology uptake
Guidelines for Applicants
This guidance is designed to help youth groups and/or individual entrepreneurial youth enterprises that may consider making an application of the Innovation Grant Support for starting up or diversifying Milk Dispensing Technology (i.e. Milk ATM) in the strategic towns of Moshi and Arusha.
1. Background
In July 2018, the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) funded by EU under the European Development Fund launched nineteen (19) months project namely DAIRYPROFIT on “Increasing Dairy Productivity and Incomes for smallholder farmers, and youth enterprise development in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania”. In Tanzania, the DAIRYPROFIT project is being implemented in partnership with Match Maker Associates Limited (MMA). MMA is business consultancy firm that empowers emerging business in Africa to grow and create impact. The project targets North Eastern Tanzania.
One of the project objective is to transform milk chains in North Eastern Tanzania to economies of scale, improve milk quality and safety and promote the inclusion of entrepreneurial youth. This will be achieved through offering innovation grant support for uptake of milk-dispensing technologies as an alternative channel for pasteurised milk marketing outlet.
Within this framework, the partners are launching a call for application for an Innovation Grant Support which is open to youth groups and/or individual entrepreneurial youth enterprises that may consider making an application of the Innovation Grant Support for starting up or diversifying Milk Dispensing Technology (i.e. Milk ATMs) in the strategic towns of Moshi and Arusha. The total Innovation Grant Support is Euro 34,000, and this will be made available to support at least 2 successful youth enterprises.
Innovation Grant Support is primarily intended to incentivise entrepreneurial youth to work in partnership with processors to offer quality milk to lower-income consumers at a reasonable / market price which will be competitive to packaged milk sold in shops and supermarkets for access most consumers in convenient units and at strategic locations. This Innovation Grant Support is provided with the purpose of enhancing time, skill and resource to work in new ways, trying new things and ultimately becoming innovative in the dairy market system in Tanzania.
Maximum amount per grant award is Euro 17,000
2. Eligible Applicants
The Innovation Grant Support is open to youth groups and/or individual entrepreneurial youth enterprises aiming to starting up or diversifying Milk Dispensing Technology (i.e. Milk ATMs) in the strategic towns of Moshi and Arusha.
The youth group and/or individual entrepreneurial youth enterprise (hereafter called ‘The Applicant’) must meet the following criteria:
The Applicant must be either youth group or entrepreneurial youth enterprise working within DAIRYPROFIT Project area in milk trading in low /medium income markets in the towns of Moshi or Arusha.
The Applicant must demonstrate the ability to run a milk ATM profitably within their current business model.
The Applicant must be able to describe the business model that would be used (most preferably by collaborating with dairy processors that are operational in the project area (Nronga & Kalali Dairy Cooperatives) demonstrating the intended impact of the DAIRYPROFIT through strategic collaboration using new and/or established partnerships in the dairy sector.
The Applicant must be able to demonstrate ability to contribute (matching concept) of costs for leasing/renting of private owned operational premises in the strategic area, up-grading of the business to food grade standards, appropriate licenses, appropriate staff wage and all other business overheads.
3. Use of Innovation Grant Support
The maximum innovation grant support amount that will be made available for qualifying youth group and/or individual entrepreneurial youth enterprise is Euro 17,000. This will cover the total budget for approved activities (inclusive of training, logistics costs, acquisitions of relevant Milk ATM technologies, etc.).
The successful applicants will be expected to clearly brand this support as agreed with CTA and Match Makers Associates. Lessons from this experience will be shared across multiple channels inorder to encourage more youth to provide related services in the dairy sector. The Ownership of any intellectual property or profit generated through this innovation grant support will reside with the youth-managed milk ATM enterprise. All direct beneficiaries of this innovation support will need to keep financial records properly for audit purposes and should be able to provide them to CTA / MMA as appropriate.
